History of Béres Pork Shop
humble beginnings...
Hungarian butcher Sandor Béres left his home city of Budapest during the 1956 uprising against the communists, who had taken possession of his father’s chain of butchers shops. Arriving on these shores as a political refugee, Sandor was determined to establish the chain once more and build a successful business.
Sandor and his wife Eileen started the business together, opening their first shop in 1961. They started out predominantly as butchers specialising in pork and beef. Being astute business people however they soon recognised the potential in selling freshly made pork sandwiches and quickly built up an excellent reputation for quality food and service, a legacy which stays with us to this day. Together they opened and built up three more successful shops.
a family affair...
Sandor and Eileen’s son, Richard, joined the business in 1988, allowing for a gradual retirement of the founders to more of a consultancy role. Under Richard’s leadership, and on the foundation of a solid business, the company embarked on a significant expansion plan. As two of the older shops had to be demolished for town planning the partners searched for new premises and subsequently the Herries Road shop was opened in 1990. This was followed by Halifax Road in 1994 (when the eldest daughter, Helen joined the family business) and the flag ship store on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough in 1997 (as youngest daughter Catherine came on board)
room for expansion...
With five shops it was necessary to move to larger production premises. In 1999 the company acquired the 5000 sq ft factory on Rawson Spring Road (which corners with Herries Road South), giving them the opportunity to produce and bake their own bread to complete the range of home made products. A shop was also opened on this site which soon became very popular. It is ideally placed for those who fancy a food break while driving in the area, as it’s just off Penistone Road and has good parking facilities. With the Hillsborough football ground handily located over the road, it’s also the perfect stopping off point for Owls fans looking to feast on a pre match sandwich (or two).
A year later the seventh shop was opened on Bellhouse Road, Firth Park. After a period of consolidation two new shops were acquired. The company moved further afield to Woodseats and Crookes. The Woodseats branch opened in November 2008, followed shortly by the Crookes branch in March 2009. With 9 branches Béres now employ around 80 staff in total.
the secret of success...
The secret behind our speciality pork sandwiches is in the preparation. Because we are traditional butchers who bone out our own meat and roast it ourselves, we can control the quality of our product all the way through from the beginning of the process to the end result; and it means that every customer gets a sandwich that embodies what Béres is all about. Joints are traditionally cured and cooked in gas fired ovens to give succulent pork and perfect crispy crackling every time. The result - Sheffield’s favourite sandwich for over 50 years!
try for yourselves...
